Benguela,
city and seaport, western
Angola, capital of Benguela
District, on the Atlantic
Ocean. Because Benguela
lacks adequate port
facilities, most export
trade is handled at
Lobito, to the north.
Refined sugar, dried
fish, soap, tools, pottery,
and lumber are the important
products of local industry.
Benguela was founded
by the Portuguese, who
built a fort here in
1587. In the 19th century
the city was a leading
slave depot. Population
(1983 estimate) 155,000.
