Lafayette
is known as the "Hub
City," and bills
itself as the unofficial
"Capital of Cajun
Louisiana." Located
in Lafayette Parish
at the intersection
of I-10 and I-49, Lafayette
was founded near Bayou
Vermilion in 1836 by
Jean Mouton, and was
originally dubbed Vermilionville.
On May 5, 1884, the
town changed its name
to Lafayette, in honor
of revolutionary war
hero the Marquis de
La Fayette.
