In the year 1661, Adrent
Vancurler (Corlear)
from Nijkirk, Netherlands
purchased land from
the Mohawk Indians who
were represented by
Sachems Cantuqou, Aiadane,
and Sonareetsie. Van
Curler and fourteen
of his compatriots established
a village called Schenectady,
an Iroquois word meaning
beyond the pine barrens
and surrounded it with
a wall fashioned of
rough hewn trees.
