By
January of 1852, gold
was discovered in the
Rogue River Valley.
Miners came to seek
their fortune, and farmers
soon followed as they
discovered the fertile
soil and favorable growing
conditions the valley
had to offer.
Medford
was incorporated February
24, 1885 (approximate
population 400) as a
depot for the Oregon-California
railroad. The town grew
rapidly as a major shipping
railway center, and
by 1896 had a population
of 2000.
