Martinsburg Berkeley
County is the second
oldest county in West
Virginia. Created in
1772 from the northern
third of Frederick County
Virginia and named for
Norbourne Berkeley,
(Baron Boutetort) Colonial
Governor of Virginia
from 1768 to 1770.
Martinsburg,
the county seat, was
founded in 1778, by
General Adam Stephen
who named it in honor
of Colonel Thomas Bryan
Martin, a nephew of
Lord Fairfax. It was
incorporated by act
of the legislature March
30, 1868.
